2018 - 19 Club Membership Contest »

The results are in for the Club Membership Contest… and there is fantastic news to report!

First off, thank you for all your work and leadership in building healthier communities.  It’s worth repeating that, although sport & physical activity are on the decline in Canada, cross country skiing in BC is bucking the trend.

As a province, we are 1200 members ahead of this day last year, and 2300 members ahead of the year before.  In particular:

  • 25 clubs already have at least 80% of their last year’s total membership!
  • 7 of these clubs have already matched or beaten last year’s total!
  • 2 clubs have already broken their all-time membership record!
  • At the rate many clubs are going, more records will be broken very very soon!
  • Last but not least, we already have 2,000 kids enrolled in the Skill Development Program, sponsored by Kal Tire.  It must be emphasized that the past 2 winters have seen the highest enrolments ever, meaning more kids than ever before are learning the skills to enjoy our lifetime sport.

A HUGE thank you to the generous contest sponsors for supporting our “sport for life”.  Each of them readily stepped up to the plate to support this initiative and they’ve been fantastic to work with!

  • Rossignol
  • Fischer and Swix
  • Sovereign Lake & SilverStar
  • Nipika
  • Pinnacles Suites at SilverStar
  • Salomon

And finally, the results:

This year we have 3 new winners, and 3 repeat winners.  (In total, there have been 15 different winning clubs in the past 3 years.)  In particular this year, we saw a very strong showing by northern BC.

  • Group A:  In the end, Sovereign Lake prevailed by the slimmest of margins.  Nice lunge at the finish by Telemark for a photo-finish tie for 2nd with Caledonia.  Very strong finish by Kimberley, gaining more than 200 members in the final few days.  Including Larch Hills, everyone in the group is ahead of this day last year.
  • Group B:  Overlander with the 3-peat.  Barely.  Revelstoke almost nipped them at the finish.  Very nice work by the chase pack, led by Nelson and Fernie.  It must be noted that Revy is 400 members and 2 months ahead of this day last year.
  • Group C:  After 3 years of being in the lead for most of each race, Hollyburn finally hangs on for the victory.  Massive homestretch efforts by both Strathcona and Snow Valley to give them a run for their money.
  • Group D:  100 Mile has come from behind to take the victory from Nordic Racers, breaking their all-time membership record in the process!  Incredible effort by Williams Lake in the final week, with the biggest gain of any club in BC, taking 3rd.  Note that Williams Lake is now 2 months ahead of last year.
  • Group E:  Whiskey Jack of Ft St John for the win, setting a new club record in the process!  Sea to Sky finished second, and Tetrahedron and Sun Peaks tied for 3rd.  Strong finish by Valhalla Hills
  • Group F:  Very nice work by little Skmana in Chase BC, with a new influx of energy and tripling their membership in the process.    Barriere and Clinton finished 2nd and 3rd followed by McKinney

Winners will be contacted shortly.

Here’s the data for Top-3 finishes, plus clubs that achieved at least 80%, ranked by percentage (of previous winter’s total membership).  Current membership total is also shown for reference.

Prizes can be used by clubs as they see fit:  to raffle off, for a family in need, to use as a volunteer draw prize, for a kids program, for an Early-Bird prize … your choice!

To win, a club has to have the highest percentage of members registered*, as of midnight Dec 1 2018, as compared to its previous winter’s total membership.   For example, a club with 200 members last year and 140 members by Dec 1 would be at 70%, and a club with 160 members last year and 120 members by Dec 1 would be at 75%.

To make things fair as well as have more winners, clubs have been divided into 6 groups and a winner will be selected from each group, for a total of 6 winners.  The prizes will be randomly distributed amongst the winners.  The groups, along with last winter’s club membership totals, are shown below.

As a recap from last season, 12 of our clubs had record memberships, and many more were at multi-year highs.  Amazing!  What is possible this year?

Fingers crossed for early snow!

*As reported in the Zone4 membership database.
