Job Description

Nelson Nordic Ski Club (NNSC) is located in the beautiful West Kootenays, just 10 minutes south of Nelson, a funky arts and sports town in the mountains.  The Club operates from early December to the end of March.  We have 25 km of machine groomed trails catering to both skate and classic techniques for beginners to expert level skiing.  We have a warming hut at Apex, the top of Clearwater and the end of Busk Euphrates trails.  We host night skiing with a lit 1.5km loop.  The club runs a School Outreach Program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, and Jack Rabbit and Track Attack programs.  The club hosts the Kootenay Cup each year with participants from neighbouring clubs such as Rossland’s Black Jack, Kimberly Nordic and Castlegar.  Nelson is a town of 10,000 people with impressive year round recreational, cultural and educational amenities.

We are looking for one passionate ski coach to work with the School Outreach program. 

Duties:

School Outreach Position:

  • Reporting to the School Outreach Coordinator, this person is responsible for providing quality cross country ski instruction to school students. 
  • This coach will work collaboratively with other coaches for up to 60 students (5 to 13 years of age) that attend a session. 
  • Attend training events to review: lesson plans and activities, rental equipment and program promotion.
  • Be reliable, full of energy, able to handle large groups of multi-aged students and project your voice when instructing.
  • Enjoy working with children and youth
  • Have skills in cross country skiing for classic technique, skate technique is an asset
  • Own classic cross country ski equipment

 

Qualifications:

  • Certified L2T coaching level (negotiable as we have someone who will assist with coaching that has this level)
  • Basic First Aid-CPR “C” certificate.
  • Knowledge of the Cross Country Canada and Canada Sport For Life (CS4L) system is an asset.
  • This position requires a clear Criminal Records Check.

The coaches’ working hours will be at minimum 20 hours per week with other duties included as agreed upon by both coach and Nelson Nordic Ski Club. On call position also available. 

Contract for Positions run from approximately early January to mid March 2016.  Must be able to take training in December 2015
