Day 2 Results for 2014 Haywood NorAm Western Canadian Cross-Country Ski Championships.

Prince George, BC – The Open men and women had a day off today as the 2nd day of the Western Championships was dedicated to Junior, Juvenile and Midget sprints.  The warm temperatures and morning snow created the changing conditions for qualification sprints, setting the racers’ times for the heats which started around noon.

Despite a brief falter on the second hill of the 0.8 Km course, John Connor, from the Larch Hill Nordic Club in Salmon Arm BC set a fast pace, winning the Junior Boys 0.8 Km Classic ahead of the second place finisher Gabriel Price of the Bulkley Valley Ski Club in Smithers.  Third place went to Alexander McDonald of the Overlander Ski Club in Kamloops. 

The Junior Girls 0.8 Km Classic was won by Katie Weaver from the Hollyburn Ski Club in Vancouver ahead of the second place finisher Avalon Wasteneys from the Strathcona Nordic Club in Courtenay BC.  Third place was Ingrid Tveten from Oslo Norway, and currently living in Ottawa.  Our local Caledonia Nordic Club members Erica Kreitz and Pippa Roots finished 16th and 18th respectively.

Annika Richardson and Jenna Sim, both from the Hollyburn Ski Club in Vancouver, placed first and second respectively in the Juvenile Girls 0.8 Km Classic.  Third place went to Rachel May of the Larch Hills Nordic Club in Salmon Arm BC.  Kaia Andal of our local Caledonia Ski Club finished 20th.

The Juvenile Boys 0.8 Km Classic first place went to Thomas Manktelow from Alberta’s Canmore Nordic Club and second place went to Ty Godfrey from the same club.  Third place went to Andrew Nash from the Larch Hills Nordic Club in Salmon Arm BC.  From our local club, Bobby Kreitz finished 26th and Logan Sherba placed 30th.

Molly Miller, from Kimberly took first place in the Midget Girls 0.6 Km Classic, ahead of second place finisher Maxine Forder and third place Katia Lumb both from the Hollyburn Club.  Danika Fiala, Sadie Bialuski and Mackenzie Connon finished 9th, 10th, and 11th, all from our local Caledonia Ski Club. Midget Boys 0.6 Km Classic was won by Remi Drolet from the Black Jack Ski Club in Rossland BC and second and third place went to Donny Broake from Yellowknife and Konrad Van Varseveld from Larch Hills Nordic Club.  Our local Caledonia Ski Club had Lian Connon and Bhavish Parshotam finishing 9th and 10th.

After two days of competition, BC is leading in the aggregate points with 2150 on the Interval Start races, from yesterday and 1709 points from today’s Sprint races.  Alberta is in second place with 1567 points from yesterday and 865 for today.  Northwest Territories are in third place with 220 points from yesterday and 252 from today, followed by Manitoba with 201 points and 172 points.  In fourth and fifth place, Ontario had 231 points from yesterday’s Interval Starts but just 15 points from today and Saskatchewan has 159 and 24 points for the two days.  The full break down of points is on a separate attachment.

Races scheduled at the Otway Nordic Centre for the 15th and the 16th include:

Ø      10:00 AM on Saturday Feb 15 – Buff NorAm Senior Sprints.

Ø      9:00 AM on Sunday Feb 16 – Free Technique Mass Start Race.

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club is hosting this major ski competition at Otway, sanctioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS is the world’s highest ski-sanctioning body), and is recognized as an official test event in preparation for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
