Caledonia Nordic Ski Club to host Teck BC Cup #1 on January 4th-5th

December 23, 2013 - (Prince George, BC) - The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club is hosting the 2014 Teck BC Cup #1 at Otway Nordic Centre on Saturday & Sunday, January 4th & 5th, 2014

Saturday’s Sprint race is presented by Home Hardware Stores of Prince George with the qualification round beginning at 9:00am and the exciting head-to-head heats at 11:00am.  Most of the action during the heats can be viewed from the lodge. On Sunday the interval start Classic Technique Race starts at 10:00am and doubles as the BC Winter Games Trials for Zone 8. For registration and information (click here).

2013 BC Cup Aggregate winners from the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club include Damian Georgyev (2nd PeeWee Boys 2), Kaia Andal (2nd Midget Girls 2), Sage Bialuski (3rd Juvenile Girls 1), and Erica Kreitz (2nd Juvenile Girls 2). These skiers will move up a category for 2014. Teck BC Cup #1 will be particularly important for Andal, Bialuski and Kreitz because both of these races will determine the BC Team members for the 2014 Ski Nationals at Cornerbrook, Newfoundland in the Juvenile Boys and Girls (born in 1998 and 1999) and Junior Boy and Girl (born in 1996 and 1997) categories.

Saturday’s and Sunday's races will also help determine individual BC Cup aggregate winners as ski racers accumulate points towards the BC Cup Aggregate Awards. These races are one third of the BC Cup Series. Teck BC Cup #2 will be held in Kamloops on January 25th and 26th. The series will culminate with the Teck BC Championships in Kelowna on February 28th -March 2nd. The BC Cup series is the premier cross country ski race series in British Columbia, it encourages cross country skiing for families of all age groups and skill levels.

Spectators are encouraged to attend and watch for free. This year spectators and participants will be welcomed by expanded parking, which increased the number of spaces by 50%. There will be designated areas where you can see some of BC's best cross country skiers compete. One of the best viewpoints is the day lodge where food and refreshments will be available. Some spectators may wish to watch along the course, which is acceptable as long as there is no interference with the race.

The Teck BC Cup #1 is an unofficial test event for the 2015 Canada Winter Games – it will showcase newly constructed facilities (such as the cross country technical building) and sprint trails that will be used in competition for the first time. Volunteers are needed in different areas and training will be provided. Each volunteer will get a taste of what it will be like to help conduct a race during a big event, in preparation for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

The club is expecting to host approximately 150-200 racers, with fourteen age categories for each gender between ages 5 years (Atoms) and over 70 years(Masters). About 70 percent of attendees are traveling from out of town and will be coming from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan Valley, the Kootenays and Bulkley Valley regions. Racers and their families are expected to provide an economic boost to the Prince George area, as they will be staying in local accommodations, dining at local eateries, and shopping in local stores.
