2018 FIS World Jr Championships - Day 1 Results

The opening races at the World Junior/ U23 Championships in Goms, Switzerland were the junior sprints. It was a sunny day, with temperatures just below freezing as the athletes headed out on the sprint qualifiers.

In the women's qualifier Moa Lundgren of Sweden set the pace, with Hannah Mehain (Sovereign Lake Nordic Club, Vernon) in 27th, the only Canadian to qualify for the heats. Annika Richardson (Hollyburn Cross Country Ski Club, Vancouver) was 52nd, Catherine Reed-Metayer 56th and Alexandra Racine was 69th.  Results  In the heats Hannah Mehain gave it a good effort but finished 6th, and out of the semis in 29th overall. Moa Lundgren was the winner.  Results

Hannah’s 29th placing was the second best result ever by a female BC athlete at the WJC.  In 2008 Alysson Marshall (Larch Hills Nordic Society) of Salmon Arm finished 25th in the same event, the Women’s Free Technique Sprint.  To see the history of top BC results at the WJC click on:  http://www.crosscountrybc.ca/world-jr-championships-bc
